Calm Gifts

When special occasions come up, many of us wonder, “What gift should I give?” But it can be even more meaningful to ask, “What gift do I already have?” Everyone has their own strengths. Some people are great at communicating or listening. Others are good at cooking, organising, teaching, caring, fixing things, or just being there for someone. These quiet strengths are always ready to be shared.

The real challenge is often not a lack of talent, but a failure to recognise what we’re good at. People tend to overlook their natural abilities because they seem ordinary. Psychologists call this the “familiarity blind spot,” where we miss what comes easily to us. Try reminding yourself: I have a skill that someone else might need today. This mindset can make your day more meaningful.

Putting your abilities into action is what makes them matter. Give encouragement, even when it feels easier to stay quiet. Make a meal for someone who’s worn out. Listen closely when someone needs to talk. Use your organising skills to help someone get back on track. As Goethe said, “Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.” Even small efforts can make a big difference.

From a secular perspective, we feel more fulfilled when we focus on what we can give rather than how we compare to others. You don’t need special talents—using your everyday strengths with purpose is enough. A skill you never use is just potential, but when you share it, it becomes meaningful.

Today, think about what you can give, not just what you can buy. Let your quiet, honest actions show your unique strengths.

May your day show the difference you make.
